Social Media & Recruitment: 10 x Lessons from TruLondon 3

Posted February 20, 2011 - By | 1 Comment

What happens if you lock 170 social media, HR & recruitment professionals in a bar for 2 days in East London? Pretty much what happened this weekend at Tru London 3, the latest in a series of unConference’s in Social Recruiting (un)organised by Bill Boorman. The creative chaos that ensued was, at times, exhilarating, inspirational, and occasionally, profound.

I attended 10 ‘tracks’ – free form debates on topics ranging from Personal Branding to Location Based Recruiting – and came away with lessons from each. Most often, what I learned had nothing to do with the topic of the debate, but then, I suspect that’s exactly the point of the unConference concept. Here are my 10 takeaways from the event:

TruLesson 1: It’s wide open for Recruitment Agents to go independent

TruLesson 2: Contrarianism gets old. Quickly

TruLesson 3: Gen Y is hostile to Personal Branding……and they are right

TruLesson 4. We continue to ignore the working man

TruLesson 5. Engagement is…….overrated

TruLesson 6. Your Twitter Avatar was a picture taken 5 years ago

TruLesson 7. The UK is miles behind everybody in terms of LinkedIn literacy

TruLesson 8. Nobody knows the law on Video in recruitment

TruLesson 9. Glen Cathey has probably never not filled a job in his life

TruLesson 10: It’s OK to love someone you don’t know

Follow the blog for expansions on each of these lessons I picked up from Tru London 3, throughout the week.
