Time was when looking for work used to be the easy part of corporate life. For the past 20 years, we have had the luxury of living and working in an expanding global economy when getting a job seemed to be a simple process of firing off your CV to a few likely sounding agents, attending the requisite interviews and deciding between the 2 and 3 offers you inevitably had on the table. Those times have gone – the labour market is ‘hyper competitive’ and every open vacancy is competed over by overwhelming numbers of applicants.

Economic turbulence is not the only challenge in the Job Search; the rise of Web 2.0 technologies and the mass adoption of social media is transforming the way in which individuals and organisations find each other. Looking for work is no longer just about sending your CV to a recruiter; it is as much about understanding your digital footprint, managing your personal brand and leveraging social media assets that differentiate you from the mass of the applicants in the open market.

The combination of these trends presents the job hunter with an unprecedented set of challenges for which legacy best practice is proving inadequate. Crafting cover letters, repurposing CV’s, searching Job Boards – these are not poor activities in themselves, but almost certainly a poor way to spend your precious and limited time. There comes a moment when a decision needs to be made – do you continue as you have done in the past, in the hope that what has been failing will suddenly succeed? Or do you take control of your job search and invest in upgrading your job hunting skillset to become a more competitive proposition to employers in the Web 2.0 world?
